Patrick and I lived in NYC and played music together for many years, then we both moved away, he to Chicago and i to Austin. Years went by and during that time he published a photo book of his Polaroids called "100 Polaroids." During the pandemic i bought his book and was looking through his photographs. One caught my eye, the corner of a table on a sidewalk with light hitting the plastic glass of water and the silverware, and a rusty railing lining the table. i immediately recognized it as a cafe in my old neighborhood (7-A in the East Village). I asked Patrick about this and sure enoght I was right, AND, he said that the two of us were having breakfast there one day when we both happened to be in NYC for shows! i wrote Old New York inspired by the feelings and memories that his polaroid evoked in me.

It was a perfect early Fall day
the day we met to say Hello
Bright rays shining off the concrete
cement and steel we used to know
Old New York
Silent sidewalks
in the morning
cuz everyone sleeps late in Old New York

a little bit of blue sky
framed by the buildings steep
it’s clean somewhere up high
above the garbage in the street
